My career is very much a hybrid. It began in television, moved to advertising, then moved again into my own business-to-business marketing communications consultancy. There, I interacted with many industries and organizations, from banking and professional services to government and higher education. I was incredibly fortunate in the choice projects I was invited to develop. Along the way, I developed some interesting entrepreneurial ventures, as well.
All the while, I sensed myself gravitating closer to my lifelong affinity for architecture and design. This first manifested itself as a consultant on projects related to architecture, development, historic preservation. I then took on some restoration/renovation projects in a historic Great Lakes hamlet, preserving a few antique treasures that were essential to the locale.
Then I took a giant step. I returned to school to complete the prerequisites for an M.A. in architecture. I can remember just about every moment of that rewarding experience. The prize was the day I received offers of admission to the design schools at University of Toronto and Syracuse University. Alas. New priorities surfaced and plans for graduate school were set aside, but my life was enriched by the pursuit. Among other things, I had a portfolio good enough to affiliate with a full service interior design studio, and there I learned the business of residential design. Three years later, I opened my own studio and design library.
It is fascinating to me that while I regard design as my innate talent, my work in communications creates a framework for my business. There is the responsibility to listen. There is the need to articulate a concept visually, verbally, and in written form. Execution is key, in all of its details. And, start to finish, the client’s objectives are at the center of every project.
I think I am typical of the entrepreneurial profile in the sense that I engage with my work 24/7. I am agile. I am fascinated by process and change. I take something from every success and every failure. And I enjoy that each new project and every day is its own mix of creativity and focus, problem-solving and discovery. What a privilege it has been to interact with so many facets of business, communications and design. I can only describe my own experience as productive and soul-satisfying.
